FORT WORTH, Texas \u2014 A Fort Worth jury has convicted four family members for their roles in a multimillion-dollar tax refund fraud scheme, federal officials announced Friday.<\/p>\n
Court records show that David Hunt, of Arlington, Texas; his twin sons, Brandon and Baylon Hunt, also of Arlington; and their half-brother, Corey Burt, formerly of Long Beach, Mississippi, filed false tax returns in the names of trusts they controlled.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The family sought more than $8.5 million in tax refunds that the trusts were not entitled to receive.<\/p>\n
According to the Department of Justice, Brandon Hunt also filed a false tax return in his own name. He and his twin brother, Baylon, submitted additional fake documents to the IRS, including falsified financial documents and altered money orders, some of which were sent in response to IRS efforts to recover the fraudulent refunds. Investigators said the defendants continued to submit false returns even after warning letters from the IRS.<\/p>\n
In total, the family received\u00a0over $1.7 million in refunds based on the false filings, which they used to buy luxury items such as furniture, cryptocurrency, a Cadillac Escalade, and a house in Mississippi. Prosecutors said the defendants transferred money among themselves to share the proceeds of the fraud.<\/p>\n
All four defendants were found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. David and Brandon Hunt, along with Burt, were also convicted of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns. Baylon Hunt was acquitted on two of those counts.<\/p>\n
Sentencing is set for March 26, 2026, before U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman in Fort Worth.
