BEXAR COUNTY, Texas \u2013 A man was arrested after federal agents found a \u201chome explosives lab\u201d at a north Bexar County home, the U.S. Department of Justice said Friday.<\/p>\n
Dustin Jay Ammons is accused of placing pipe bombs at ATMs outside two San Antonio banks on Sept. 12 and Sept. 26. <\/p>\n
The DOJ said Ammons \u201cattempted to breach the machines with the explosives.\u201d<\/p>\n
White powder was found near the ATMs, which investigators determined to be PentaErythritolTetraNitrate (PETN), the DOJ said, a common material used in explosives.<\/p>\n
On Friday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) executed a search warrant on Ammons\u2019 residence in the 300 block of Eugene Sasser.<\/p>\n

The DOJ said agents found a .40 caliber pistol and \u201cparts and components of a destructive device, specifically a pipe bomb, inside Ammons\u2019s vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n
The vehicle at the residence allegedly matches the vehicle from the September cases, the DOJ said.<\/p>\n
A criminal complaint also alleges \u201cAmmons had supplies consistent with making PETN and other homemade explosives in his garage, including precursors and beakers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The DOJ said agents also found multiple \u201csuspected destructive devices in various stages of manufacture,\u201d along with a rifle.<\/p>\n
The FBI, San Antonio Police Department Arson Bureau, Bexar County Fire Department, Bexar County Fire Marshals and Bexar County Emergency Management also assisted in the raid.<\/p>\n
Ammons was previously convicted for possession of a stolen firearm. On Friday, he was charged with possession of a firearm and possession of an unregistered destructive device.<\/p>\n
If convicted, the DOJ said he faces up to 15 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
Neighbors heard \u2018flash bangs,\u2019 were told to evacuate<\/p>\n
Neighbors near Ammons\u2019 home told KSAT there was law enforcement activity in the area since at least 6 a.m. Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard a \u2018bang, bang, bang\u2019 … all of a sudden you just heard the police say, \u2018Come out with your hands up,\u2019\u201d neighbor Billie Thomas said.<\/p>\n
Thomas said she and her husband were told to stay inside because law enforcement was going to detonate something in the garage. She said the ATF told her they found explosives in the home\u2019s garage.<\/p>\n
Jason Jimenez, who is visiting family, said an officer told him they \u201cfound some items\u201d and it would be safer for them to leave until they were done.<\/p>\n
One neighbor told KSAT he heard \u201cflash bangs\u201d and the teams threatening to send dogs in. He said law enforcement also told him to evacuate because they were going to detonate something.<\/p>\n
Ivan Oregel said he was leaving the neighborhood around 6 a.m. when he saw a commotion at the home. <\/p>\n
\u201cI see a bunch of police officers fully armored, decked out,\u201d Oregel said, \u201cand I saw them go inside the house and I hear like four loud bangs, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
Oregel said the whole situation was \u201ckind of scary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI never thought something like this would happen (in the neighborhood),\u201d Oregel said.<\/p>\n
A CPS Energy crew at the scene said they received a report of a fire alarm, and they responded to the area in case they needed to turn off power.<\/p>\n
