{"id":86805,"date":"2025-12-13T14:59:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T14:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/86805\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T14:59:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T14:59:10","slug":"self-driving-waymo-vehicles-repeatedly-passed-stopped-school-buses-officials-say-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/86805\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-driving Waymo vehicles repeatedly passed stopped school buses, officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">AUSTIN, Texas (KEYE) &#8211; There\u2019s a bit of a conflict brewing between driving technology and education in the capital city of Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">School officials in Austin said Waymo\u2019s self-driving vehicles often are not stopping for buses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Waymo is making changes after receiving more than 20 bus safety violations from the Austin Independent School District this school year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want any of these children hurt, or worse,\u201d said Jason Coomer, an attorney who is not involved with the school district\u2019s complaints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This week, the autonomous vehicle company voluntarily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/?nhtsaId=25E084000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/?nhtsaId=25E084000\">filed a software recall<\/a> with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration related to how its self-driving cars respond to stopped school buses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe have known instances, over 20 instances of them violating laws in school zone,\u201d Coomer said. \u201cSomebody needs to step up and take action and say, \u2018Stop. This is a danger.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In a December video first captured by an Austin ISD bus camera, a Waymo vehicle could be seen driving through a stop. The vehicle only briefly stopped after it committed the violation and then drove off again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">After the specific violation, the school district asked the company to cease its operations around pickup and drop-off times for students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThey did not agree with our risk assessment and respectfully declined to stop operating,\u201d Austin ISD Police Chief Wayne Sneed said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Waymo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s problematic when the company\u2019s not listening because their product could really hurt people, especially school children and families,\u201d Coomer suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Waymo\u2019s system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/?nhtsaId=25E084000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/?nhtsaId=25E084000\">recall<\/a> has been registered on the NHTSA website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">District 9 Council Member Zohaib Qadri has been outspoken about the company\u2019s operation in Austin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cAny time a vehicle fails to stop for a school bus, that is deeply concerning,\u201d Qadri said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The council member said it\u2019s critical that companies meet safety standards and are held accountable when they fall short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Austin isn\u2019t the only city experiencing this problem. The NHTSA is looking into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/equipment-detail\/WAYMO\/5TH%252520GENERATION%252520ADS\/a__5633624#investigations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/equipment-detail\/WAYMO\/5TH%252520GENERATION%252520ADS\/a__5633624#investigations\">a similar incident in Atlanta<\/a> from earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 KEYE via CNN Newsource.
