A 57-year-old San Antonio man died today \u2013 Tuesday, Dec. 16 \u2013 after apparently jumping from a fishing pier in Port Aransas, police said.<\/p>\n
The man\u2019s name hasn\u2019t been released, pending notification of next of kin.<\/p>\n
Witness accounts indicated that the man jumped from a private pier that extends into the Aransas Pass from Channel View Condominiums, according to Lt. Joseph Rivas, a detective with the Port Aransas Police Department.<\/p>\n
The man had been staying in the condominium with two co-workers. The co-workers were fishing with him when the incident occurred about 3 a.m., Rivas said.<\/p>\n
The man didn\u2019t say anything before he climbed over a rail and jumped into water 8 to 9 feet deep, the detective said. Police haven\u2019t determined why he did it.<\/p>\n
The man\u2019s co-workers \u201cdidn\u2019t believe he was a daredevil-type guy,\u201d Rivas said. \u201cThey still don\u2019t understand why he did it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man disappeared underwater and didn\u2019t resurface, Rivas said. The co-workers reportedly didn\u2019t know whether their friend was a strong swimmer.<\/p>\n
A search was conducted by a boat from the Coast Guard station in Port Aransas, a vessel from the Texas Parks and Wildlife vessel and a police boat from the Port of Corpus Christi. Also involved was a helicopter from the Coast Guard station in Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n
The Parks and Wildlife boat found the man\u2019s body about 250 feet east of the pier, Rivas said.<\/p>\n
