{"id":91013,"date":"2025-12-17T05:11:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T05:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/91013\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T05:11:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T05:11:14","slug":"texas-ag-paxton-sues-5-tv-companies-for-spying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/91013\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas AG Paxton sues 5 TV companies for &#8216;spying&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-2150322649.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-7d0efd03=\"\"\/> article <\/p>\n<p data-v-7d0efd03=\"\">(Photo by Justin Lane-Pool\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">AUSTIN &#8211; Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing five television manufacturers for &#8220;spying on Texans&#8221; through content recognition software.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Paxton cites ties to the Chinese Communist Party for some of the companies, implying the government the corporations are based in could be using Texans&#8217; data for nefarious purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Texas TV lawsuit  <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/attorney-general-paxton-sues-five-major-tv-companies-including-some-ties-ccp-spying-texans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Paxton is concerned<\/a> over Automated Content Recognition technology, which recognizes the sights and sounds on some TV sets for content optimization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The attorney general refers to ACR as &#8220;an uninvited, invisible digital invader,&#8221; saying it sends your data back to the company without your consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Paxton is suing Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense and TCL Technology Group Corporation (&#8220;TCL&#8221;) over the tech. The last two are based in China, prompting Paxton&#8217;s national privacy fears.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> What is ACR technology? <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">In the most basic terms, ACR technology sees and hears what you&#8217;re watching so it can get an idea of your taste in content, and then recommend things you might like based on what you&#8217;ve seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">This technology is typically opt-in, meaning you have to agree to let your TV use it. If your TV doesn&#8217;t ask your permission, the feature can still be turned off in the user settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> &#8216;Invasive, deceptive, and unlawful&#8217; <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTBC\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;Companies, especially those connected to the Chinese Communist Party, have no business illegally recording Americans\u2019 devices inside their own homes,&#8221; said Paxton in his release. &#8220;This conduct is invasive, deceptive, and unlawful. The fundamental right to privacy will be protected in Texas because owning a television does not mean surrendering your personal information to Big Tech or foreign adversaries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">FOX Local has reached out to the five companies named in the lawsuit. Of the five, Hisense and LG responded, both saying it&#8217;s company policy to refrain from commenting on pending legal matters.
