{"id":91047,"date":"2025-12-17T05:42:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T05:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/91047\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T05:42:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T05:42:18","slug":"man-faces-life-sentence-after-admitting-to-carjacking-elderly-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/91047\/","title":{"rendered":"Man faces life sentence after admitting to carjacking elderly woman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) &#8211; A Lubbock judge will decide the punishment for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2024\/02\/27\/lubbock-teen-indicted-aggravated-robbery-charge-after-attempted-car-theft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2024\/02\/27\/lubbock-teen-indicted-aggravated-robbery-charge-after-attempted-car-theft\/\">a man who admittedly carjacked a 78-year-old woman back in January 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">19-year-old Zion Perez entered an open plea Tuesday morning for charges of aggravated robbery, a first degree felony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Prosecutors say he and another teen attacked Carolyn Batteas outside a church at gunpoint, hitting her with a blunt object and trying to steal her car. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Court records show Paul Curran, a witness to the attack, was trying to stop the two teens when Perez fired a gun at him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Perez\u2019s attorney claims he\u2019s changed his life around and is asking for leniency. Meanwhile, prosecutors have witnesses and a 911 call showing multiple people saw the crime unfold. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Judge Trey McClendon of the 137th District Court will determine his sentence.
