{"id":91957,"date":"2025-12-17T22:24:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T22:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/91957\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T22:24:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T22:24:07","slug":"corley-remains-lawful-holder-of-precinct-2-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/91957\/","title":{"rendered":"Corley remains lawful holder of Precinct 2 seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) &#8211; The State of Texas is now taking up a lawsuit over who the commissioner is for southeast Lubbock County, after Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish removed Jason Corley from that seat last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Potter County District attorney in Amarillo is representing the state, and has filed to intervene on Corley\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Scott Brumley filed a petition to lead the case against Mark Meurer on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Meurer is the man County Judge Curtis Parrish swore in as Precinct 2 commissioner when he declared Corley\u2019s seat vacant last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Brumley\u2019s filing indicates Corley asked his office to lead the state\u2019s case after the Lubbock County DA\u2019s office recused itself from the matter. His petition largely retains the same arguments as Corley\u2019s original filing, claiming Corley did not trigger an automatic resignation when he announced an exploratory committee for a congressional bid, in mid-November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The state\u2019s filing claims Corley didn\u2019t become a \u201ccandidate in fact\u201d until he declared earlier this month, less than a year and 30 days before his term was set to end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">County Judge Parrish claims Corley automatically resigned his seat because he used \u201cCorley for Congress\u201d images and letterheads in his November announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">There\u2019s a court hearing in this case set for Friday, Dec. 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 KCBD.
