The Princeton Independent School District will ask the Texas Education Commissioner to delay implementation of teacher certification requirements in House Bill 2 (HB 2) passed earlier this year by the Legislature. The bill significantly tightened teacher certification requirements statewide.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Beginning with the 2026\u201327 school year, the bill requires any \u201cteacher of record\u201d for a foundation curriculum course to hold an appropriate certificate or permit issued by the State Board for Educator Certification. A teacher of record is defined as the person responsible for delivering most instruction and assigning grades. HB 2 largely eliminated long-standing practices that allowed districts to place uncertified teachers in core academic classrooms indefinitely.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Donald McIntyre said PISD has had trouble hiring enough teachers and currently has 50 teachers serving in foundation courses with certification from a \u201cdistrict of innovation\u201d or DOI plan.<\/p>\n
