CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Christmas came early for hundreds of students at Oak Park Special Emphasis School as Nate\u2019s Next Kid Up surprised the campus with nearly 500 gifts, spreading joy, inspiration, and a powerful message of giving back.<\/p>\n
The celebration took place at Oak Park Special Emphasis School, located at 3801 Leopard Street, where students gathered early in the morning to take part in a holiday event they never saw coming.<\/p>\n
\u00a0The campus, home to more than 500 students, was selected as one of only two schools across South Texas to receive the special Christmas giveaway.<\/p>\n
Oak Park Principal Jose Valerio said the moment was especially meaningful because the surprise was kept secret from students until the big reveal.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I got contacted and they said they were only selecting two schools, I told them about our campus and how hardworking and deserving our students are,\u201d Valerio said. \u201cWhen we found out we were selected, we were very, very excited. Our kids had no idea this was going to happen, so seeing their reactions today has been incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
The event was organized by Nate\u2019s Next Kid Up, a nonprofit founded by young community leader Nate Gonzalez. The organization began in 2020 after Nate made a Christmas wish to donate his own gifts to children in foster care, hoping they would have a blessed holiday.<\/p>\n
\u00a0His vision quickly grew into a larger mission, partnering with CASA of the Coastal Bend to collect toys, sports equipment, and monetary donations for children in need.<\/p>\n
That initial act of kindness sparked the creation of Nate\u2019s Next Kid Up, which now supports foster children through year-round programs focused on education, sports, the arts, and personal development. Initiatives like the Foster Road Trip, Fiesta de Arts, Dream Big Scholarship Program, Christmas Foster Store, Back-to-School Drive, and Foster Day aim to build confidence, leadership, and lasting memories.<\/p>\n
Valerio said the impact of the organization goes far beyond the gifts.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want our students to take away the message that even kids can serve the public and be servant leaders,\u201d he said. \u201cI want them to look at Nate and feel inspired and motivated to turn around and help others \u2014 whether that\u2019s the underprivileged, the elderly, or anyone who needs support.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thanks to the generosity of community partners, volunteers, and sponsors, every student on campus received a gift \u2014 something Valerio says made the day even more special.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were blessed that the entire campus was able to come out and receive something,\u201d he said. \u201cIt makes them feel chosen, valued, and celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Organizers say the event reflects the heart of Nate\u2019s mission: empowering children, strengthening community connections, and proving that one young person\u2019s dream can spark real change.<\/p>\n
As the holiday season comes to a close, Nate\u2019s Next Kid Up continues to live out its message to \u201cDream Big\u201d \u2014 ensuring that children across the Coastal Bend feel supported, inspired, and hopeful for a brighter future.<\/p>\n
