{"id":93430,"date":"2025-12-18T23:08:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T23:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/93430\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T23:08:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T23:08:10","slug":"derek-austin-gillespie-charged-in-series-of-late-night-explosions-in-austin-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/93430\/","title":{"rendered":"Derek Austin Gillespie charged in series of late night explosions in Austin, Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kwtx.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/kwtx.com\">AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) &#8211;<\/a> The Austin Police (APD) has concluded a months-long investigation into a series of explosive incidents that occurred in Central and South Austin and arrested a suspect, police said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Derek Austin Gillespie, 49, is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon-explosive device, a third-degree felony.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Derek Austin Gillespie\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3UMXVSC5BRCLFP6G2CXGNEW77U.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"1225\" \/>Derek Austin Gillespie(Courtesy Austin Police Department)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Beginning in August 2025, APD received reports of repeated late-night explosions in the areas surrounding Jones Road and the Blunn Creek greenbelt near St. Edward\u2019s University. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">On Aug. 13, the APD Bomb Squad responded to an explosion in the 2500 block of Jones Road and collected evidence of an improvised explosive device. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">On Dec. 16, investigators identified Gillespie as the suspect and executed a search and arrest warrant in the 500 block of Lightsey Road.
