After a brief side quest in Austin, I jumped at the chance to return to the city as CultureMap San Antonio\u2019s editor. I didn\u2019t waste much time before stuffing my face.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is, I rarely had the chance to pause. 2025 brought a whiplash pace of new restaurant <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonio.culturemap.com\/news\/restaurants-bars\/best-new-restaurants-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">openings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonio.culturemap.com\/news\/restaurants-bars\/restaurant-bar-closings-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">closures<\/a>\u2014 along with city developments like <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonio.culturemap.com\/news\/city-life\/props-a-b-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Project Marvel<\/a> that will transform the 210 for better or worse. Still, a few everyday meals made their way through the data overload, keeping me going through all the cosmic shifts. <\/p>\n<p>Turns out, we all need comfort, and San Antonio\u2019s hospitality scene is always ready to give a warm hug. In no particular order, here are the 10 dishes I thought the most about in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Beef picadillo at <a href=\"https:\/\/order.toasttab.com\/online\/con-huevos-tacos\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Con Huevos Tacos<br \/><\/a>Yes, Austin is a taco town, but believe me when I say I sprinted to this East Side taqueria the moment my last moving box was unloaded from the truck. The Capital City doesn\u2019t have a single flour tortilla that holds up to Con Huevos\u2019 vellum-like wrapper with just the right amount of satisfying tug. Add ground beef, fork-tender potatoes, and a fruity habanero salsa, and it&#8217;s eye-closing, a reverie folded into the present moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"aa6f0\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"a1b4df15b26918ac38372720884fc250\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201333%201000'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/butter-cake-at-magpie.jpg\" width=\"1333\" height=\"1000\" alt=\"Butter cake at Magpie\"\/> Magpie&#8217;s butter cake is dessert for people who hate dessert.Magpie\/ Instagram<\/p>\n<p>Butter cake at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magpie.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magpie.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Magpie<br \/><\/a>I barely have a sweet tooth, and, when I do, it can usually be sated by a couple of bites of Rocky Road. Fold a metric ton of butter into the sugar, and now we\u2019re talking. <\/p>\n<p>Church Burger (hold the onions) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/church.burger\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Church Burger <br \/><\/a>We all got caught up in the smash burger craze, perhaps as an excuse to yell a Hulk-like \u201csmash,\u201d but the flattened patties rarely lived up to the hype. This succulent, crisp wonder is what the trendsetters promised. Although the food truck can get mischievous with topping \u2014 most notable peanut butter and jelly \u2014 the patties don\u2019t need any adornment. Just add the subtle pucker of housemade pickles and perhaps a High Life pony from the Palomino bar.<\/p>\n<p>Soup For My Family at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juelet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jue Let<br \/><\/a>If a cocktail sips somewhere between consomm\u00e9 and clam chowder, is it a \u201cdish?\u201d And what if it\u2019s served with tiny accoutrements like a tiny cube of pickled potato and a crispy pancetta chip? Personally, I don\u2019t care. I\u2019ve made a meal out of beverage director Lis Forsythe\u2019s innovative savory martini more times than I can count.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Corn Crispy Dog at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bargimmegimme\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gimme Gimme<br \/><\/a>No dish divided San Antonio this year more than this Southtown bar\u2019s take on the familiar crispy dog, wrapped in a blue corn tortilla from local tortilleria Ancient Heirloom Grains. While communities are rightfully wary of Columbusing \u2014 just look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/17\/british-baker-outrages-mexicans-with-attack-on-ugly-bread\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">viral furor<\/a> over British baker Richard Hart\u2019s ill-advised remarks about Mexican bread culture \u2014 this lark of a dish ain\u2019t it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"e851f\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"4e0e463fe37eea0e3cdf3029dd95d12e\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201080%20810'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/blue-crispy-dog-gimme-gimme.jpg\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" alt=\"blue crispy dog Gimme Gimme\"\/> The unbearable lightness of a blue crispy dog.Gimme Gimme<\/p>\n<p>Menudo at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burntbeanco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Burnt Bean Co.<br \/><\/a>When CultureMap Houston editor Eric Sandler suggested meeting in Seguin for Sunday breakfast, I wasn\u2019t prepared for quite the feast. But with three of his food-savvy friends in tow, we went through towering pork chops, molleja tacos, and steak and eggs topped with Chef Ernest Servantes&#8217; shimmering salsa matcha. Somehow, the most humble dish cut through the embarrassment of riches.<\/p>\n<p>Minus the Bagel focaccia at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tucker.s_italian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tucker\u2019s Italian<br \/><\/a>I\u2019ve made many batches of focaccia this year, to the point of no longer using a recipe. While I will miss poking the dough to get those familiar ridges and divots, no more. <\/p>\n<p>Roast chicken at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petitcoquinsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Petit Coquin<br \/><\/a>Being a frequent habitue of Hands Down, I was primed to hate its sequel. I did have some words about why the formerly vibrant space was now so blindingly white. Chef Max Mackinnon shut me up with a perfectly crisped half chicken served with simple schmaltz-flavored rice. It\u2019s a yoga session, a slo-mo moment, and an example of what happens when ingredients are first \u2014 and an antidote to the cluttered Instagram feeds trying to convince locals we only eat with our eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Champignon quesadilla at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tacopolissa\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tacopolis<br \/><\/a>Chef Alex Paredes may be synonymous with carnitas in San Antonio, but more often than not, I go vegetarian at his new taqueria. The lamb barbacoa has adobo zest, the birria is luscious, but never count out the modest mushroom.<\/p>\n<p>Chicken Sapporo ramen at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaedamabattleship.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kaedama Battleship<br \/><\/a>I have a friend who craves soup regardless of how sweltering the San Antonio weather may be. If she\u2019s reading, I hope she knows this downtown noodle shop will now be in permanent rotation. The culinary team of John Philpot, Alex Roth, and David Filler has created a ramen that transcends seasons. In winter, snuggle up to the warm nostalgia of chicken broth. In summer, appreciate the citrus pop in the meatballs and the verdant shishito peppers.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dang, I\u2019ve missed you, Alamo City.
