It\u2019s been an up-and-down season for the Cowboys<\/a> in head coach Brian Schottenheimer<\/a>\u2019s first year in charge.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been highlights like the big come-from-behind win over the Eagles<\/a> and Thanksgiving victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs<\/a>. But there\u2019s also been plenty of lowlights, like the ugly home loss against the Cardinals and blowouts against the Broncos and Bears.<\/p>\n

So what does Cowboys owner Jerry Jones<\/a> make of his first-year head coach?<\/p>\n

Jones was asked exactly that on a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM). Here\u2019s what he had to say about Schottenheimer:<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019 comments have been lightly edited for clarity.<\/p>\n

Jones: \u201cWell, I\u2019ve, of course, had the opportunity to be around, at least three, now, first-time coaches. Jimmy then, of course, Dave Campo. Really in the pros have been around I think it\u2019s 5 or 6.\u201d<\/p>\n

He ranks right there with all of them. [He\u2019s] has had an outstanding year, and it doesn\u2019t surprise me because of all of the wealth of experience that he had on coaching staffs in pro football and in the NFL. And it doesn\u2019t surprise me because of his youthfulness, his vim and vigor for never having done the head coaching function before, and he\u2019s been relentless.”<\/p>\n

He\u2019s used his skills that, his premium skills, which is his ability to communicate. His ability to relate both with his staff and his players and he\u2019s outstanding. He\u2019s technically as sound as you can draw up and we like his philosophy of how to play football.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve had some adversity this year. He\u2019s met them head on. He\u2019s had slip-ups that every coach would have and does have no matter how long you\u2019ve been coaching. And he meets those head on and comes back and doesn\u2019t make those same mistakes again, or if he makes them, it was a mistake. So, bottom line is I\u2019m very pleased with his first year as coach.”<\/p>\n

Are there any particular challenges that come with a first-time head coach?<\/p>\n

Jones: \u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n

And particularly for him, he needed to draw on everything he had with his experience around the NFL. Frankly, and I\u2019ve said it, so you\u2019re probably tired of hearing it. He grew up around it. <\/p>\n

But let me tell you one thing, he\u2019s the busiest guy in town. Not only is he calling the plays, but he\u2019s supervising or keenly involved. You can\u2019t call him unless you\u2019re involved in that. But at the same time, he\u2019s had the kind of challenges that you can\u2019t draw up relative to the team, relative to individual issues on the team and some of the setbacks that we\u2019ve had. The adversities that come with being disappointed in how you\u2019re playing on the field, he\u2019s had it all.”<\/p>\n

And if you drew up a training ground, a smorgasbord for a first year, you\u2019d have it with what he\u2019s dealt with. We\u2019re certainly disappointed with where we were and that was asking a lot for us to feel like we should be significantly further along, but I understand why we feel that way and he feels that way. But boy, he\u2019s made progress and we\u2019ve got a great future ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
