A conversation with Melody Munitz is like chugging down an energy drink. It\u2019s almost impossible not to be enthused about life and everything in it yourself.<\/p>\n
So it\u2019s interesting, to say the least, that she is portraying a character who is her exact opposite.<\/p>\n
\u201cWednesday and I are extremely different. She\u2019s dark, and I\u2019m bubbly,\u201d Munitz said with a chuckle. \u201cI\u2019m actually more like Enid.\u201d<\/p>\n
Enid is the best friend of the title character in the Netflix series \u201cWednesday<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Munitz is playing Wednesday, the child of Gomez and Morticia Addams in the upcoming production of \u201cThe<\/a> Addams Family<\/a>,\u201d which is part of the Performing Arts Fort Worth\u2019s Broadway at the Bass Series. The musical will be onstage at Bass Hall<\/a> Oct. 24-26.<\/p>\n \u201cI love playing a character who\u2019s so different from me. It\u2019s a fun challenge,\u201d the 25-year-old Munitz said. \u201cBut in the end she\u2019s really just a person who wants to love and be loved.\u201d<\/p>\n Munitz said there is one thing that created an instant connection with her character, however.<\/p>\n \u201cShe really is a scientist with the way she goes about on the show,\u201d she said. \u201cMy other background is science. The way she locks into solving problems, that connects with me.\u201d<\/p>\n Early start included appearance on \u2018Sesame Street\u2019<\/p>\n Munitz, who grew up just outside of New York City, realized early in life that she wanted to be an entertainer. In fact, she was on an episode of \u201cSesame Street\u201d when she was just 4.<\/p>\n \u201cI remember that was fun,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve always just loved performing. I can\u2019t think of a better way to live my life.\u201d<\/p>\n One month before her seventh birthday her parents took her to Broadway to see a production of \u201cMary Poppins.\u201d That solidified her desire to become an entertainer.<\/p>\n \u201cI pointed to the stage and said \u2018That\u2019s what I want to do with my life,\u2019\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n When she was 12 Munitz joined a traveling troupe from Random Farms Kids Theater, a nonprofit organization in Thornwood, New York, dedicated to youths with theatrical dreams.<\/p>\n \u201cThat first experience was exciting. I knew I wanted to tour. Taking theater to people is a great thing, very thrilling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She remains in contact with the organization, she said.<\/p>\n \u201cI was just in touch with the artistic director this morning,\u201d she said, noting that she was invited to speak at an upcoming event, but had to decline because of her show\u2019s touring schedule.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a big alumni group forming, and I\u2019m a part of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n And while she\u2019s yet to perform on Broadway, she has performed off Broadway. But now she\u2019s living her dream of touring.<\/p>\n \u201cI get to see so many places and perform in front of so many people who might not be able to make it to Broadway,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u2018Addams Family\u2019 musical unlike the others<\/p>\n Munitz said the \u201cAddams Family\u201d musical is unlike any story ever before about the creepy and kooky family. Oh, the usual characters are there, including Uncle Fester, Cousin It, even Thing (the crawling hand), plus a host of ancestors, she noted.<\/p>\n But this is not your grandparents\u2019 \u201cAddams Family\u201d they grew up with on black-and-white TV, or even the one in the movies that your parents grew up with.<\/p>\n The plot features an older Wednesday. She\u2019s 18 and in love with a \u201cnormal\u201d boy from Ohio.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re meeting her in a brandnew moment. She\u2019s changing,\u201d Munitz said.<\/p>\n Munitz said that while the musical has been seen by many people \u2014- it is still the No. 1 produced high school musical in the nation \u2014 there are some surprises in store this time.
