{"id":97823,"date":"2025-12-23T00:28:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T00:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/97823\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T00:28:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T00:28:06","slug":"texas-is-holding-622m-in-unclaimed-property-from-the-austin-area-and-wants-you-to-claim-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/97823\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas is holding $622M in unclaimed property from the Austin area \u2014 and wants you to claim it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">AUSTIN (KXAN) \u2014 This holiday season, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts wants Austin-area residents and business owners to check and see whether they have unclaimed property they may be entitled to claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The state is currently safeguarding $10.5 billion, and it reports $622.6 million of that property belongs to 5.7 million individuals, families or businesses in the Austin area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/why-feb-1-perfect-day-004517854.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:How to claim unclaimed property in Texas;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> How to claim unclaimed property in Texas <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a statement released on Monday, Comptroller Kelly Hancock said, \u201cEvery dollar in our Unclaimed Property program belongs to a Texan, not the government \u2026 This time of year, especially, even a small amount can make a meaningful difference for families. I encourage every household in the Austin area to take a moment to search \u2014 it\u2019s simple, it\u2019s secure and it just might put a little extra money back in your pocket for the holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">KXAN spoke with Hancock in a virtual interview for more insight, where he explained the property could be anything from mineral rights to deposits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI mean, my son, for example \u2014 when it was announced, we just decided to look and my son had a deposit from an apartment he had in Dallas when he was going to school there,\u201d Hancock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Anyone can search for unclaimed property on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.claimittexas.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ClaimItTexas.gov;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ClaimItTexas.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">You can enter your name \u2014 or the names of family members, including maiden names or the names of deceased relatives \u2014 into the search tool. If property is found, the site provides simple instructions to submit a claim. The service is free, secure and available to all Texans, according to the Comptroller\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou may have a little time while you\u2019re sitting at home \u2014 you know, get on your laptop while you\u2019re watching \u2014 or listening to Christmas music,\u201d Hancock said. \u201cThis is a time where people have downtime, and so we really would like them to have their money back \u2014 and we want to do everything we can to help in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
