{"id":99345,"date":"2025-12-24T03:58:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T03:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/99345\/"},"modified":"2025-12-24T03:58:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T03:58:08","slug":"texas-sheriffs-departments-may-soon-have-closer-relationships-with-ice-due-to-sb-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/99345\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas sheriff&#8217;s departments may soon have closer relationships with ICE due to SB 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sngzynmeo828yjm3.jpg\" alt=\"New Texas laws going into effect in 2026\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-4292be72=\"\"\/>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox7austin.com\/video\/fmc-yzrfplohr68g2udd\" data-v-4292be72=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Texas laws going into effect in 2026<\/a> <\/p>\n<p data-v-4292be72=\"\">Sheriff&#8217;s offices in Texas may soon have closer relationships with ICE.\u00a0Senate Bill 8 goes into effect on Jan. 1, where certain counties may have to help with federal immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; Sheriff&#8217;s offices in Texas may soon have closer relationships with ICE.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Senate Bill 8 goes into effect on Jan. 1, where certain counties may have to help with federal immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p> What is Senate Bill 8?  <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTBC\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The backstory:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Senate Bill 8 will require sheriffs in Texas to apply to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s 287 G Program, which delegates state and local law enforcement officers the authority to perform specified immigration functions under ICE direction.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;There is a number of us that have been 287 G sheriffs for many years,&#8221; says Brian Hawthorne, the Chambers County Sheriff and president of the Sheriff\u2019s Association of Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"insert-article-type featured-headline\" data-v-3f8abc4c=\"\">\n    Featured\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"https:\/\/fox7austin.com\/news\/texas-laws-taking-effect-january-1\" target=\"_blank\" data-v-3f8abc4c=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Texas laws set to take effect Jan. 1<\/a> <\/p>\n<p data-v-3f8abc4c=\"\">Texans will ring in the new year with dozens of new laws taking effect, ranging from a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence to tax exemptions for business owners and agreements between federal immigration agents and local sheriff&#8217;s offices.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">According to Hawthorne, certain sheriff\u2019s departments across the state have been enrolled in the program for quite some time, but with the passing of Senate Bill 8, agencies have been flocking to apply.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;Now that it&#8217;s passed, I feel like there are a lot of sheriffs that are doing everything they can to be compliant with the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">For Texas sheriff\u2019s departments, there are three models which they can apply to be a part of:<\/p>\n<p> The\u00a0Jail Enforcement Model\u00a0is designed to identify and process removable aliens \u2014 with criminal or pending criminal charges \u2014 who are arrested by state or local law enforcement agencies.The\u00a0Task Force Model\u00a0serves as a force multiplier for law enforcement agencies to enforce limited immigration authority with ICE oversight during their routine police duties.The\u00a0Warrant Service Officer\u00a0program allows ICE to train, certify and authorize state and local law enforcement officers to serve and execute administrative warrants on aliens in their agency\u2019s jail. <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;Now there are some sheriffs that have had any desire to want to be apart of the 287 G program. Mostly it has a lot to do with politics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTBC\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The other side:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Not everyone has been on board with the new law, which has drawn criticism from civil rights groups across the country. The ACLU of Texas has been in opposition to the bill since it was passed into law, saying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclutx.org\/press-releases\/aclu-texas-comments-passage-sb-8-bill-forcing-sheriffs-conduct-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;S.B. 8 will not make our communities safer, but it will force sheriffs to do the work of ICE in support of the federal government\u2019s shameful mass deportation efforts. This bill will also divert limited law enforcement resources, lead to racial profiling, and drive victims and witnesses of crime into the shadows. The legislature should not strip local communities of their ability to make decisions about what keeps them safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTBC\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;I disagree with them in the aspect that most of these people that this program targets are in the country illegally. If you are here illegally, and you&#8217;re also committing crimes here in the state, then we should cooperate and work with ICE,&#8221; says Hawthorne.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Hawthrone estimates that when the legislation was first introduced only about 20% of sheriff\u2019s offices across the state were enrolled in the 287 G Program.
