Chittenango, N.Y. – A giraffe calf was born at The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango last week. The birth was announced on Monday.
This giraffe is the third born at The Wild Animal Park, owner Jeff Taylor said.
The unnamed male calf has been on display for the public this week. He was born on Aug. 13.
According to Taylor, the calf was about six feet tall and 100 to 150 lbs at birth. Everything has gone smoothly so far, he said.
The next steps are to keep the baby nursing and moving as he matures, Taylor said.
Taylor said the park expects to launch a naming contest across their social media accounts in the near future. He said the prize is yet to be determined.
The organization has eight giraffes in total which are split between The Wild Animal Park, and Taylor’s newest endeavor, The Haven of The Wild resort.
The Wild Animal Park is a zoo privately owned by Taylor. It’s been around for about 10 years. The zoo features a variety of exotic and domestic animals including tigers and lions.
The Haven is described on the website as a “sister property” to The Wild. It is expected to open later this year.
Taylor described the new location as a high-end luxury resort where visitors can rent out areas that put them up-close-and-personal with some of the savannah animals.
Taylor said that once the baby giraffe has matured, he expects him to be moved to The Haven. He will live there with his brother, Jabari, who was born in 2023.
Taylor said that the birth has brought increased traffic to the park this week, and expects even more this weekend.
