A fisherman ended up hospitalized after being bitten by the animal while posing for a photo.
People reports that Shawn Meuse was on a fishing trip with friends on the island of Cayo Costa in Florida when one of them hooked a lemon shark.
In a video Meuse posted on Facebook, Meuse can be seen standing above the shark, holding it by the nose, before it thrashes loose.
In an interview with WINK, Meuse said that he and his friends “just finished taking the hook out of his mouth” and were about to release the creature back into the water when “the shark just turned and bit me.”
Meuse’s injuries were so severe he required air medical transport to the hospital and surgical treatment.
According to WBBH, Meuse was grateful to survive, saying “if it was a few inches one way, you know, I might not be here.”
He also said he was looking forward to getting back out to the beach, adding he had a message for the shark that bit him: “See you next time.”
“I’d go back today if I could leave the hospital,” he told WINK. “Luckily, he only took a little bit of me and not a lot.”
