The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has reopened the Goodman Mountain Trail near Tupper Lake.

The trail was closed in June after a bull moose was spotted showing unusual behavior.

Wildlife biologists monitored the animal for months, but its condition did start to decline so severely that it was humanely euthanized earlier this month.

The moose’s remains are being tested by the DEC’s Wildlife Health Unit and the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab to determine what caused its illness and strange behavior.

With the trail back open, hikers are being reminded to follow the “leave no trace” principle, including respect wildlife, stay on the trails and carry out your trash.
