Marcelo Melo claimed his 40th tour-level doubles title Saturday when he teamed with fellow Brazilian Rafael Matos to win a tense Winston-Salem Open doubles final.

The duo staged a comeback from one set down to upset third seeds Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a 93-minute title clash. This is their second trophy of the year, following their emotional win on home soil in Rio de Janeiro in February.

“It means a lot, I think we had a great week since the first match. I think we played very good in every single match. Today was not the start we wanted, but we could take everything from the first matches to turn this match for us,” Melo said.

It All Adds Up

Matos and Melo saved four of five break points they faced and won 77 per cent (36/47) of their first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to clinch their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with the Portuguese-Austrian duo. En route to the final, they defeated fourth seeds Matthew Ebden and John Peers in the quarter-finals and second seeds Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus in the semi-finals by saving one match point.

“We did some good weeks this year, but we had some ups and downs also….It’s important to do this a week before a Grand Slam, a good week to be there, preparing,” said Matos, who won his 11th tour-level title.

With the triumph, they improved to 18-15 this season, according to the ATP Infosys Win/Loss Index and are up two spots to No. 17 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.
