The Golden State Valkyries visit the Dallas Wings this afternoon in College Park for a matchup that’s as much about pride as playoff positioning.
The Wings now own the worst record in the WNBA at 9–28 and have been eliminated from playoff contention, despite being led by Paige Bueckers, a favorite to win the Rookie of the Year.
They’re in their worst stretch of the season, having lost nine out of their last 10 games. But three of those games were decided by a single basket.
Meanwhile, the Valkyries are fighting to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot. They’ve dropped their last three games and five out of their last 10 games.
The margin of error for Golden State is thin, with the 9th Los Angeles Sparks just half a game behind them and having the momentum to overtake them thanks to Kelsey Plum’s MVP-caliber play.
Both Dallas and Golden State have been hit with injuries, with the Valkyries having lost their leading scorer, Kayla Thornton, to season-ending surgery in July.
But the Valkyries have, to some extent, managed without her, going 8-6 over that stretch — including a 10-point win over Dallas on July 25.
Prediction
Dallas has pulled off some near-surprises amid this losing stretch, with Bueckers’ play ascending to new heights. Expect another strong performance from Bueckers, but a single-digit Wings loss. Golden State just has too much riding on this game to let it go easily.
Prediction: Golden State 83, Dallas 75
