Kochi: A youth barged into the super specialty block at Ernakulam General Hospital and caused destruction at the reception counter on Sunday. Several computers and other equipment were damaged in the incident.
As per the authorities, the bare-chested youth reached the hospital through the wicket gate on the Park Avenue Road around noon and demanded money from the staff at the reception counter. The youth, identified as Albin (26) of Thevara, said that he had no shirt and wanted Rs 500 to buy a new one.
Even though the hospital staff told the youth that they would give him the money, he suddenly rushed into the reception counter and damaged the computers and other equipment. He also broke the windscreen of a car parked outside the super specialty block.
Incidentally, the male security officers were absent in the hospital when the attack took place. However, the women security personnel were on duty and other employees also rushed to the spot. The youth was nabbed by the employees and handed over to the police.
The police, who later registered his arrest, said that they were examining whether the youth was under the influence of drugs.
“The hospital has suffered a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh. Two computers and two printers were damaged in the incident. We have asked the police to register a case based on the Hospital Protection Act,” said Dr Shaheer Shah, the superintendent of the hospital.
Visuals of the incidents have been captured by the CCTV cameras in the hospital and in their mobile phones by employees.
Meanwhile, there were reports that the youth had also created a ruckus near Ernakulam boat jetty before he reached the hospital. However, no complaint was filed with the police in this regard.
