Melania Trump remains as dedicated as ever to her son, Barron, as he begins his second year at New York University, according to a source

A source tells PEOPLE that the first lady’s daily life centers heavily around Barron’s well-being, even while she navigates White House duties and works on personal projects

“Melania watches Barron constantly in an effort to be sure nobody messes with him or bullies him,” the source says

Melania Trump continues to keep close tabs on her only son, Barron Trump, as he prepares for his second year of college.

A political source tells PEOPLE that the first lady has put a considerable amount of her focus on Barron, his social life, and his well-being during his time at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

“Melania watches Barron constantly in an effort to be sure nobody messes with him or bullies him, as this is a constant worry with her,” the source says. “She always knows where he is and what he’s doing.”

Barron started at NYU in September 2024 as the son of a former president, and in the midst of his father, Donald Trump‘s third presidential campaign.

Barron’s first year at the university was marked by Donald’s election win in November and his subsequent inauguration in January 2025 — as well as the standard social and academic challenges a college freshman might face.

In December 2024, a source told PEOPLE that Melania had opted to keep Barron out of on-campus housing for the time being, and instead shared Donald’s youngest son was living in his family’s Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan.

“She will do everything she can to make sure Barron does well in school and is socially and mentally adjusted to his life as a college student,” the political source told PEOPLE of Melania, adding that dorm living wasn’t “in the stars” for Barron “at this point.”

The same month, another source told PEOPLE that Barron had adjusted well socially at NYU, despite his father’s political position and New York City’s strong Democratic tilt.

“He’s tall and handsome,” the source said. “A lot of people seem to think he’s pretty attractive — yes, even liberal people like him.”

Though Melania takes the job of being a mother seriously, she has plenty else on her plate while her son is away at school.

“Melania is quiet and behind the scenes but always busy with something she is pursuing herself,” the latest political source tells PEOPLE, adding that she divided her time this summer between New York City, New Jersey and Washington.

Recently, she has been “busy with her documentary,” the source says, which is scheduled to release in partnership with Amazon Prime Video later in 2025.

She also made news in August for writing a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to stop the invasion of Ukraine on behalf of innocent children who have been caught up in the violence.

The source says the letter was “not a departure for her,” adding, “It’s an issue close to her heart. She will always speak out when she feels it.”

PEOPLE reached out to the first lady’s office for comment.
