The upcoming Conjuring movie, Last Rites, is set to be the final film in the main series. But even as the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren comes to a close, director Michael Chaves has hinted that the franchise could continue in new ways.

Speaking to ComicBook, Chaves said the film was designed to be the Warrens’ last chapter. At the same time, he admitted there is room for future spinoffs. “This is a series that’s done so well with its spinoffs and going into other characters, so I think there could totally be a life in that respect,” he said.
He also added that if “The Conjuring phone called, I would totally pick it up.”
The Conjuring: Last Rites is directed by Chaves and written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, from a story co-created by James Wan. The film is inspired by the true-life Smurl haunting investigated by the Warrens. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine, alongside Mia Tomlinson as their daughter Judy and Ben Hardy as Judy’s boyfriend Tony. The film follows The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, released in 2021 and is the ninth entry in the franchise.
Producer James Wan also spoke about the movie’s conclusion. In an interview with Collider, he called the ending a “bittersweet farewell,” but he also left the door open. “You never know what could happen down the line,” he said.
The upcoming film introduced Judy and Tony. This could also set up a possible new direction for the universe. Tomlinson revealed she spoke with Judy Warren while preparing for the role. “She gave me this mantra that I then carried with me throughout filming, which is ‘don’t look at it, don’t give it recognition,’” she shared.
For now, there is no official announcement about a spinoff or the next step for the franchise. Meanwhile, The Conjuring: Last Rites will release in theatres worldwide on September 5.
