Chase “pointed the s— out right away,” Hall recalled

Anthony Michael Hall says his awkward teenage years didn’t go unnoticed by his cast mates on the set of National Lampoon’s Vacation — particularly Chevy Chase, who the actor says “pointed the s— out right away.”

On Sunday, Aug. 17, Hall, 57, and Chase, 81, both appeared at a cast reunion at Fan Expo Chicago at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, where they reflected on making the hit family comedy directed by Harold Ramis and written by John Hughes.

Hall, who played Clark Griswold’s (Chase) son, Rusty, was 14 at the time the 1983 movie was made. “Puberty kicked in for me,” Hall said at the event, per Entertainment Weekly. “I was a foot taller and like a different kid.”

He added: “Guess who pointed the s— out right away and made me feel really good about it on set.”

Elsewhere during the reunion, Hall recalled receiving an autograph from his on-screen dad when filming wrapped. “I just remember the autograph you wrote me when we wrapped,” Hall told Chase.

“He goes, ‘To Anthony, you’re a regular Robby Benson,’ ” Hall said, referring to the handsome actor who was chosen to voice the Beast in Disney’s 1991 animated film, Beauty and the Beast. “And then it was also: ‘If you’re going blind, you’re doing it right.’ “

Still, Hall didn’t take the teasing to heart, telling Chase, “This is why I love being your son for 40 years. I love you.”

Hall and Chase were joined at the fan event by costars Beverly D’Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Dana Barron and Randy Quaid. D’Angelo, 73, played Clark’s wife, Ellen, in the Vacation franchise while Quaid, 74, has appeared as Cousin Eddie in the films. Barron, 59, played the Griswold daughter Audrey in the first Vacation movie while Lewis, 52, took over the role in Christmas Vacation. Hall played the family’s son Rusty in Vacation; Johnny Galecki played the role in Christmas Vacation.

The reunion came as Chase gears up for a fall tour where he’ll be screening Christmas Vacation around the country.

Chase expressed his pleasure at being reunited with his castmates on Instagram. “Great time this past weekend in Chicago at @fanexpochicago with old friends and new ones,” he wrote in the caption of a video that recapped his experience at the event. In the video, he embraced Quaid, Lewis and D’Angelo, took photos with fans and met up with other Expo attendees, including comedian Rob Schneider and actor Brendan Fraser.
