Iga Świątek made history with her first-round victory over Emiliana Arango at the US Open on Tuesday.
With a 6-1, 6-2 victory, Świątek broke Monica Seles’ record for most consecutive first-round tournament wins.
Seles’ streak of 64 consecutive wins in WTA singles matches occurred from 1990 to 1996. Her run was ended by Kimiko Date at the Chase Championships in November 1996.
Świątek’s streak began in August 2022 after her loss to Ons Jabeur at the Western & Southern Open. The 24-year-old is undefeated in first-round matches at the US Open, extending her streak to 7-0. She is also a combined 26-1 in the opening round of the four Grand Slam events.
Entering this year’s tournament as the No. 2 seed, Świątek has advanced to the semifinals in each of the first three Grand Slam events. She is coming off one of the most dominant title performances at Wimbledon, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6–0, 6–0 in the finals.
Świątek needed just one hour to Arango and punch her ticket into the second round at the US Open. She will take on Suzan Lamens in her next match.
