JAKARTA – The Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) has put pressure on the need for regulations that can strengthen the synergy between internet service providers (ISP) in Indonesia.

Because according to the Chairman of APJII, Muhammad Arif Angga, currently the ISP in Indonesia has reached more than 1,320 units, and about 500 other ISPs are applying for permission to the government.

“Currently, there are too many ISPs, there must be a moratorium first so that we can tidy up regulations so that the industry is healthier, more sustainable, and more evenly distributed,” said Arif at the Digital Transformation Summit 2025, Tuesday, August 26 in Jakarta.

According to him, the large number of ISPs will also not guarantee the equal distribution of the internet in Indonesia. On the other hand, this situation is actually considered to create an unhealthy market.

“Are these two thousand really solutions for equity and quality? I’m not sure. If this is not stopped while it continues to boom, I dare to guarantee that in the future this will only kill and kill. Just waiting for time for the natural selection,” he said further.

Even if they are in one auspices, but if the number of ISP companies is not regulated, there will be competition among members and even tariff competition will emerge.

APJII hopes that if there is a temporary suspension for ISP, then its implementation must be carried out throughout Indonesia.

“But at least in Java or Bali. Because in Java alone the number of providers is already a thousand. So if it’s not national, at least Java-Bali for phase 1 we have to moratorium first,” he said.

With this regulation, not only controlling the number of ISPs, this also helps equalize the internet throughout Indonesia and not only focuses on the Java and Bali regions.

“We need synergy to do so that the use of the internet in Indonesia is more evenly distributed. But there is also a need for regulations so that the number of ISPs does not pile up and only exists in Java and Bali,” he said.
