No. 5 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli is the highest-ranked player competing in the opening round of the ATP 250 in Bastad and he does not have an easy task. Cristian Garin has already won two Challenger titles this year, and the former World No. 17 is showing glimpses of who he once was. It will be a fascinating match on Bastad Court 1 on Tuesday. Who do you think will prevail?
ATP Bastad Day 2 Predictions
Andrea Pellegrino vs Jaime Faria
Head-to-head: First meeting
Jaime Faria has been struggling physically this year, but maybe qualifying at Wimbledon suggests that’s already behind him. Nonetheless, this doesn’t seem like an easy match. When Andrea Pellegrino catches rhythm, there are very few players on tour who hit the ball cleaner than him off both wings. After pushing through the qualifying and posting some great results this year, this could be a good spot for Pellegrino to make impact at the higher level. Especially as Faria is still a little short on match practice.
Prediction: Pellegrino in 3
Elias Ymer vs Tristan Boyer
Head-to-head: First meeting
Tristan Boyer’s ranking still seems relatively close to the Top 100, but it’s looking more and more likely that the American has missed out on the opportunity he had this year. With a 13-20 record for the season, Boyer just hasn’t been able to catch fire and find any long-lasting confidence. It’s a good draw, but Elias Ymer is a player we’ve already seen overperform in front of the home crowd. Mentally, Boyer just doesn’t seem like he can grind out tough wins right now either.
Prediction: Ymer in 3
Hugo Gaston vs Chun-Hsin Tseng
Head-to-head: First meeting
Hugo Gaston is yet to win a match since the injury he suffered from at Roland Garros, but at least the showing in Iasi last week indicated his health was getting better. Chun-Hsin Tseng also lost in the opening round of a Challenger after Wimbledon, which hasn’t been a regular occurrence for him at all recently. The massive lead he blew against Sumit Nagal isn’t going to help his confidence, but he’s been in good shape this season and has to be the favorite over Gaston.
Prediction: Tseng in 3
Tomas Barrios Vera vs Mariano Navone
Head-to-head: Navone 2-1
Nice throwback to the three entertaining meetings they had in 2023, including Mariano Navone winning his first Challenger title after beating Tomas Barrios Vera in the Poznan final. He owns seven trophies at that level now, including a phenomenal performance in Braunschweig last week. Most of this season Navone was playing well but not getting the results, now it seems like this might be opportunity to fire back at the rest of the tour.
Prediction: Navone in 2
Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Cristian Garin
Head-to-head: First meeting
It’s been a great season for Camilo Ugo Carabelli with his ranking improvement allowing him to regularly feature in the big events, including on grass. Of course now he’s back on his favorite surface and we will need to see how quickly he gets back into the right groove. Cristian Garin might not give him that much space to do it as he’s been in brilliant form himself recently. The very confident former Top 20 Chilean seems like a dangerous guy to face at the moment.
Prediction: Garin in 3
