WNBA point guard Jacy Sheldon presents a stark contrast to Kelsey Plum when it comes to signing autographs. She was more than happy to sign a full sleeve of trading cards.
The same cannot be said for the outspoken veteran.
Mind you, it is unclear as to what the autograph-seeker plans to do with his newest WNBA signatures. However, the context of the video presents a very similar scenario.
Kelsey Plum tore into an autograph creeper.
Plum is one of very few players in the WNBA whose trading card carries value on the resale market. Especially when it is signed.
As a result, the 30-year-old point guard is often asked for her autograph. That led to an uncomfortable encounter at the end of June.
Plum was walking from the bus to the front door of her team hotel in Minnesota when a group of grown men approached with an open book of trading cards. The book was open to a specific page of five or six different cards.
All of the cards are of the specific athlete— in this case, Plum.
There was more than one grown man with the same type of book and some of their cards have already been signed. She already gave them what they wanted in the past.
With that in mind, Kelsey Plum questioned one particular autograph-seeker known on TikTok as “minnygraphs99.” Is it weird to wait for the players with a book of autographs outside of the hotel?
Although the video did not necessarily present Plum in the best light, her teammate provided further context that completely vindicated her frustration. Not only were the Los Angeles Sparks on the road, they switched team hotels at the last minute. The autograph-seekers still found them.
Jacy Sheldon didn’t ask questions.
In contrast to Plum, Sheldon walked right up to an autograph-seeker by the name of Ryan Fors and signed five different cards. The audio of the video is dubbed over by music but the second-year WNBA player appeared to ask no questions and immediately walked away after she was done signing.
Here’s the thing.
Ryan Fors and “Minnygraphs” seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to their intentions. Minnygraphs is a well-documented seller of autographed trading cards. Forms claims only to be a collector. He says he doesn’t sell.
I don’t know whether I believe him fully but it does appear as though his intentions are more pure.
Maybe Jacy Sheldon knows of Fors. Maybe she just doesn’t care as much as Kelsey Plum.
Either way, regardless of whether Fors sells his cards or not, it is still pretty weird to wait for a specific athlete in a specific location to ask them to sign as many as five or six trading cards… I get it, but…
