The program aims to send children one free, age-appropriate book in the mail monthly from birth through age 5.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is now officially in Sacramento.

The program aims to provide children one free book in the mail monthly from birth through age 5. They hope to enroll 65,000 children in Sacramento County within five years.

On average, kids can expect their first book to take up to six to eight weeks to arrive, then they’ll start coming at the beginning of the month.

Households with multiple children can sign up each child individually.

The effort is made possible through funding from United Way, the Sacramento County Office of Education, the cities of Rancho Cordova and Sacramento, the Kellogg Family Foundation, the Rotary Club of Elk Grove and the Laguna Sunrise Rotary Club.

They are seeking additional funders as it costs money to print and mail the books.

Applications for Sacramento County and Yolo County can be found here.

The Imagination Library was first expanded to California in June 2023. Dolly Parton was inspired in 1995 to create the program  by her father who couldn’t read or write.
