Seminal British horror The Descent celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with a brand new 4K restoration recently premiering at FrightFest, and a new update from director Neil Marshall suggests the story isn’t over just yet.
Released in 2005, The Descent remains a firm fan-favorite among horror fans for its all-female cast and masterful building of tension. The film stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, Nora-Jane Noone and MyAnna Buring as a group of daredevil women who go caving in the isolated Appalachian mountains, one year after the death of Sarah’s (Macdonald) husband and young daughter. What they find below the depths makes claustrophobia seem like a kid’s party, as the gang are stalked by a clan of humanoid, hungry monsters. A less-beloved sequel, The Descent Part 2, followed in 2009, although Marshall was only involved in an executive producer capacity.
In a recent interview with Metro, the Dog Soldiers director shared an exciting update regarding another movie in The Descent canon, this time with him back at the helm in a directorial capacity:
‘I can definitely see it happening […] It’s something I think would be good to wrap up the story. So many other franchises have been exploited over the years, but nothing has really happened with The Descent.
In keeping with modern horror trends however, Marshall teases that another chapter of The Descent could take place before the original film:
‘I’ve got a few ideas. The trend seems to be prequels. I was always interested in finding out what happened to the miners who went down with the cave first.’
News of another Descent movie joins Marshall’s other recent intriguing update that, while a Dog Soldiers 2 sadly isn’t happening due to rights issues, the Hellboy director has another werewolf tale up his sleeve with Werewolves of London currently in development.
