BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and Bend Fire & Rescue are conducting a recovery operation on the Deschutes River at Lava Island Falls southwest of Bend.
Around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, kayakers discovered a body at Lava Island Falls after paddling to the island to take photos. The area of the river where the body was found is extremely difficult to access, and recovery crews estimate it will take at least four to five hours to complete the operation safely. The identity of the body is not known.
KTVZ News has been on the scene since 5 PM, looking to learn more.
The operation is taking place in an area not accessible to the public. The Sheriff’s Office asks community members to please avoid the area and allow first responders the space to complete this complex recovery.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office’s Search and Rescue Team has been searching for the third body of a group that went over Dillon Falls while on an inner tubing trip on the Deschutes River. Again, it is still not confirmed whether this is the body of the third missing person.
