It is true that the Leaving Cert is a rite of passage for most young men and women since secondary school education was made free by then Education Minister Donogh O’Malley in 1967.

For many, it’s not necessarily an enjoyable path, or objectively, an especially fair one. Everybody takes a different track to get to where they want and the outcome of the exams are by no means definitive.
