‘Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow’ will be open to the general public through Sept. 7, with extended evening hours next week.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is extending evening hours next week for the exhibit “Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow” as it prepares for its grand finale.

The exhibition will continue to be open to the general public through Sept. 7, but will now be open until 9 p.m. from Tuesday, Sept. 2, through Friday, Sept. 5. The 9 p.m. closing time will also be in effect on the show’s closing date, Sunday, Sept. 7.

What to expect from the exhibit

“Discover an incredible exhibition of works from a Japanese artist known for his unique style that examines the cultural energies of contemporary Japan — anime, manga and the otaku culture that grew around these popular art forms — against the backdrop of Japanese traditions,” according to the Cleveland Museum of Art’s site.

The museum says Murakami uses his art “to interpret historical events and their lasting effects,” with focuses ranging from the end of World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Visitors can explore how — after shared traumatic events — art can address crisis, healing, outrage and escapist fantasy,” according to the museum. “Artworks explore topics such as how people may change when experiencing trauma, how major disasters can lead to outpourings of creative and religious fervor and how art addressing contemporary passions as diverse as gaming, the metaverse, trading cards, street fashion trends, anime and manga can be an entry point to engaging the past.”

“Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow” is located in the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Exhibition Hall and Gallery at the museum.

The CMA recommends reserving tickets through its online platform by visiting the exhibition’s web page. Tickets can also be reserved by phone at 216-421-7350 or on-site at one of the ticket desks.
