If the US Open has done one thing right in 2025, it’s that people are talking about doubles again!

Completely overhauling the mixed doubles event, US Open tournament organizers received plenty of criticism before and during the tournament.

However, while some weren’t happy with the decisions made, more fans watched the US Open mixed doubles than ever before, as the two-day event was positively received.

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori lifted the title in mixed doubles, but that’s not the only doubles event scheduled at the US Open in 2025.

The men’s and women’s events are both set to begin shortly, although the draw for the ATP event still hasn’t been released…

Jon Wertheim says the US Open are holding out for singles players to sign up for the men’s doubles

During the latest episode of ‘Quick Served’, Jon Wertheim explained why US Open tournament organizers have held off on releasing the draw for the men’s doubles event.

“You will notice that the men’s doubles draw as we record this [Tuesday evening] has not yet been posted. That’s out of character, but that’s not an omission,” he said.

“The USTA [United States Tennis Association] decided to try something new and delay the doubles draw as late as they can.

“Why is that? Well, for one, it’s just better; they think that this gives them a chance to showcase men’s doubles, doubles in general, during Labour Day weekend.

“But also… what does that mean? It means that first-round singles losers might have a change of heart and might want to enter the doubles draw.

“So, as we talk about involving more singles players in doubles draws, this is the way to do it.

“Prolong and delay the men’s doubles draw. If you’re wondering why, when you click on the draw, you are not seeing men’s doubles, that is why. Let’s see if it is successful.”

On the women’s side, first-round ‘loser’ Venus Williams chose to sign up for the doubles event last minute.

The US Open tournament organizers will hope some ATP stars follow in her footsteps, but who were the biggest names to fall in round one?

Former champions Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic would make welcome additions to the US Open doubles draw.

Medvedev, in particular, could do with the change of pace doubles provides after his painful first-round exit in the singles competition.

Only time will tell if any of the above names choose to sign up, but it will certainly be worth looking out for.

Who won the US Open men’s doubles event in 2024?

12 months ago, the world’s best doubles teams arrived at Flushing Meadows with title ambitions.

Dropping just one set en route to the title, the Aussie duo of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson won their first Grand Slam together.

However, they won’t return to defend their title in 2025, as Purcell continues to serve his 18-month suspension from tennis.

Several teams are in contention to take the title in their absence, none more dangerous than the British duo of Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash, the world number ones.

Winning Wimbledon in their previous Grand Slam outing, the pair would love nothing more than to double their major tally at the US Open.

The 2025 US Open men’s doubles tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday, August 30.
