Coco Gauff is into the second round of this year’s US Open, having edged past Ajla Tomljanovic in round one.
Gauff loves the US Open fans, who produced plenty of noise in her opener at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
The American is the third seed in the WTA singles event, but needed almost three hours to beat Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-7(2-7), 7-5.
Gauff claimed her first of two Grand Slam titles at the US Open back in 2023, lifting the trophy aged just 19.
And she’s now back to winning ways at the event, with Darren Cahill having really enjoyed her opening battle with Tomljanovic.

But many tennis fans were not impressed by the opinion from the coach of Jannik Sinner, having heard his verdict on ESPN that it was one of the “best women’s matches we’ve seen for the entire year”.
One reacted to that claim on X, saying: “That would be inaccurate, I watched it,” with another noting: “They had long rallies which made it entertaining but there were too many errors as well.”
Another fan agreed, saying: “Wonder where he set the bar. He didn’t see [Emma] Raducanu v [Aryna] Sabalenka at Wimbledon, then?!”
Other fans in agreement said: “Better than Sabalenka v Raducanu I don’t think so but it was very good,” and “The problem here is that they believe the things they say.”
And further reaction arrived from others who wrote: “Maybe he saw it with his eyes closed” and “With 60 unforced errors from the winner? Drama, maybe, but quality?”
Darren Cahill should stick to coaching Jannik

Coco Gauff wins error-strewn US Open match against Ajla Tomljanovic
Many fans did enjoy the drama of the meeting between the WTA duo, but at the same time were not too impressed by the quality.
During their lengthy battle at Arthur Ashe, Tomljanovic hit 12 winners and 56 unforced errors, with Gauff’s winners and errors tallies standing at 29 and 59 respectively.
Up next for world number three Gauff is 2024 Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic, who beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in round one.
The Croatian clinched that memorable success last summer at Roland Garros, which also played host to Gauff’s stunning French Open title earlier this year.
Vekic is currently ranked 49th in the world, with the four-time WTA title winner having once reached 17th place.
She has met Gauff twice in her impressive career so far, with both players having each secured one win so far.
The Croatian defeated the American en route to that superb silver medal, winning their round of 16 tie 7-6(7), 6-2.
But Gauff exacted her revenge at the 2025 United Cup, defeating her WTA Tour rival 6-4, 6-2 in Australia.
