Newly released police body-cam footage shows the 7-foot-4 NBA rookie being pulled over on May 1 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where an officer accused him of driving 101 mph in a 55-mph zone. What followed was not just a citation, but a stern reprimand that has now gone viral.
Zach Edey was confronted by police after speeding at 101 mph
According to Indiana State Police records, Edey was driving a white Kia Sorrento with Tennessee plates when he was clocked at nearly double the legal speed limit. The video shows the officer immediately calling him out.“You know exactly why I pulled you over,” she told him. “You were going 101!”Edey attempted to defend himself, saying he was briefly speeding to overtake another vehicle. The officer dismissed the explanation.“No,” she fired back. “You don’t pass at 100! The road is 55. You were going almost double the speed limit! You could pass someone at 80. 80? OK. 100?! 100 is not OK. Ever.”The 23-year-old eventually handed over his license and registration. The officer cited him for speeding and reckless driving, telling him the penalties were “absolutely” fair.
Zach Edey resolves case with plea deal and fine
Court documents show Edey later reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. On July 23, he admitted to speeding at 91 mph— still well above the limit— and agreed to pay $639.50 in fines and court costs. In exchange, the misdemeanor reckless driving charge was dropped (per WTHR).The case is now closed, but the video continues to circulate online, highlighting the sharp exchange between the towering athlete and the unimpressed trooper.Edey has not publicly commented on the incident, and there has been no indication that the NBA or the Memphis Grizzlies plan to discipline him further. On the court, Edey’s first NBA season was mixed. Selected ninth in the 2024 Draft, he averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds over 66 appearances. However, his development was slowed by a left ankle injury that required surgery in June. The Grizzlies announced he will likely miss the start of the 2025–26 season as he recovers.Despite the setback, Edey has vowed to improve. “I have to work on a lot of things this offseason: my lateral quickness, my explosiveness, my athleticism in guarding the perimeter,” he said at his season-ending media session. “There’s a lot to work on.”Also Read: “$15M for ten weeks” — Caitlin Clark offered whopping Big3 paycheck in a bid to pull Indiana Fever star away from WNBA
