The San Jose Sharks might be a young team finding their way on the ice, but, off of it, their marketing team appears to be full of savvy veterans.

In what may be the NHL promotional giveaway of the year, the team announced that its opening night giveaway will be a bobblehead of star forwards Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith in hotel beds, playing off a viral moment from last season. All fans who enter SAP Center on October 9 for the Sharks’ game against the Vegas Golden Knights will get the dual bobblehead

For an extra $35, fans can also purchase a Tyler Toffoli bobblehead that features him in a cot. The add-on completes the set but only a limited run of 1,000 Toffoli bobbles will be available to buy at the arena. All proceeds will go towards the Sharks Foundation.

The silly bobblehead design is in reference to the trio’s sleepover after a March 4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres during the 2024-25 season.

Toffoli went on the “Never Offside with Julie and Cat” podcast – hosted by his own wife and Julie Petry (wife of Jeff Petry) – in March to explain how the whole situation came to be.

“[The day before the game] I went to the front of the [team] bus and we were just like talking and then all of a sudden – out of nowhere too – [Smith is] like, ‘Alright, if all three of us score tomorrow, you’re sleeping over.’ And I’m like, ‘Will, I’m not sleeping over, like I’m 32 years old like it doesn’t happen anymore.’”

But Smith wasn’t taking no for an answer. According to Toffoli, the 20-year-old centerman was convinced he’d envisioned a hat-trick of goals for them.

“He said, “Nope, it’s going to happen I feel it. We’re all going to score,’” Toffoli continued. “Long story, short, we ended up playing really well in Buffalo and I scored the empty net goal, whatever, with like 30 or 40 seconds left… As soon as it went in I went to the bench and I was laughing, I didn’t even realize all three of us scored. Will is like, ‘Sleepover! Sleepover!’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about? It’s not happening.’ And then we ended up getting on the plane after the game and my coach came up to me and was like, ‘You know you have to sleep over, you know that, right?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh God, here we go.’”

Indeed, Smith, Celebrini and Toffoli all turned on the red light in the Shark’s 6-2 win over the Sabres. They combined for five points on the night (3g, 2a) but Toffoli admitted he wouldn’t have taken the late third period pot shot if he was aware of what was at stake.

“If I had thought of that, I would’ve passed it,” he said jokingly. “Just because they would’ve been so mad about it.”

The trio gathered in a hotel room the next night to fulfill their promise, complete with typical sleepover cuisine. Toffoli posted the photo that inspired San Jose’s bobbleheads to his Instagram.

“So they ordered cookies,” Toffoli added. “From what I understand, they order milk and cookies every night.”

Other NHL teams have slowly been releasing their promotional calendars for the 2025-26 season. The Washington Capitals dropped theirs on Thursday, featuring fan giveaways like an Ovi-Wan Kenobi bobblehead and a Pierre-Luc Dubois designed hat.

The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings, both members of the “Original Six” era of the NHL, are celebrating their centennial seasons this year. Their respective promotional schedules feature theme nights and giveaways surrounding each club’s century-long history.
