LA GRANDE — La Grande Fire Department’s own Merle Laci will be the next fire chief.
The City of La Grande announced Thursday, Aug. 28, that Laci will succeed current Fire Chief Emmitt Cornford. Laci, who currently serves as the deputy fire chief for the city’s fire department, was chosen following a comprehensive selection process.
“Merle Laci has demonstrated the qualities of leadership, professionalism and dedication that are essential to guiding our fire department into the future,” La Grande City Manager John O’Brien said. “We are confident that under his leadership, the department will continue to provide exceptional service and protection to our residents.”
Laci brings more than 30 years of fire service to the position. He joined the department in 2006 and has served as deputy fire chief since 2023. Laci has held the positions of captain, fire inspection and code enforcement officer, and assistant training coordinator.
Prior to his time in La Grande, Laci worked as captain and training officer for the Elgin Fire Department from 1991 through 2005. He also was the president of service and an EMT-intermediate for the Elgin Ambulance Service.
O’Brien thanked members of the selection panel for their thoughtful input and commitment to a thorough review of the candidates. Laci’s appointment to the role reflects his experience, leadership and commitment to the community.
He will officially assume the duties of fire chief as Cornford prepares for his retirement on Oct. 31, after 44 years with the La Grande Fire Department.
