Superior, Wisconsin, a city near Duluth in the Twin Ports region, has launched its first city-owned fiber broadband network, ConnectSuperior.

Construction of the open-access network has already completed in one neighborhood, with others soon to be completed, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

That report, filed Thursday, quoted Mayor Jim Paine, who said the network was unique in Wisconsin.

According to earlier reports, the city broke ground on the network in September of 2024.

In total, the project is expected to cost upwards of $40 million, Northern News Now reported last year.

The city is described as being located along “one of the most popular tourist routes in the Midwest,” on the western shores of Lake Superior, according to the city’s website.

The network’s website also currently offers service packages starting at $62.95 per month, as of the filing of this report.

“We’re on a mission to provide access to affordable broadband internet,” ConnectSuperior’s website states. “With ConnectSuperior, the City of Superior has set up a high-performance connectivity network, allowing open access to different telecommunications companies who can offer you a variety of very competitive high speed internet services.”

Packages from two providers are currently listed on ConnectSuperior’s website: Advanced Stream and Superion Networks.
