Arne Slot has confirmed the appointment of Andy Robertson as Liverpool’s new vice-captain.
The long-serving left-back takes over from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who left the club to join Real Madrid at the end of last season.
Robertson, who captains Scotland at international level, will support skipper Virgil van Dijk and lead the team when the Dutch defender isn’t involved.
Asked if had made a decision on the vice-captaincy ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal at Anfield, Slot told reporters: “It’s Robbo. He has played here so many years, won the league twice. It was Virgil, Trent, Robbo and Mo (Salah) last season. Trent left so there are a lot of logical reasons for the decision.
“He is a very good player, plays many games, knows what it takes, but also knows the culture of the club and the dressing room.
“Apart from all the quality he shows on the pitch, he plays also a big role in the culture we have here at this club. Which is, as I said many times last season, the biggest gift I could get from Jurgen (Klopp).
“That’s also something we definitely have to keep for my successor to have, this same culture, if I am ever leaving this club.”
Robertson, 31, has made 344 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Hull City in a £10million deal in 2017.
As well as winning two Premier League titles with the club, he has also enjoyed glory in the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, Carabao Cup (twice) and UEFA Super Cup.
Robertson has yet to start in the Premier League so far this season with Slot preferring new left-back Milos Kerkez, who was signed from Bournemouth for £40million in June.
