“Let’s play a round” now has a whole new meaning on the WNCC Scottsbluff Campus.
WNCC President Greg Dart, other school representatives and students Wednesday celebrated the completion of a new 18-hole disc golf course that encompasses the entire campus, with the exception of the Harms Center.
Dean of Students Dr. Emily Norman told the crowd her prior experience with the sport was a lone outing was during high school, where she promptly lost her disc in the woods.
Norman said she had no idea about the cost of disc golf catch baskets when discussion on the project started a year and a half ago, and during her work on the project, so she discovered the Disc Golf Foundation. “They offer tremendous support for organizations who are looking to grow the sport of disc golf. Mike from the Disc Golf Foundation sent me information on their Matching Basket grant program, (and) all I needed to do is find the other half of funding and beg our facility staff to install,” said Norman. “This is where the WNCC Foundation really stepped in; I applied for their Opportunity Grant over the other half of the baskets’ cost.”
The new course, which can take a couple hours to complete, is open to staff, students and the general public.
Also highlighted during the event was a complete refresh of Pioneer Hall, which Dart told those in attendance was really needed for a building that originally opened in 1969.
“That project has brought a hall that’s been around for quite some time and given it a new life, and we’re so excited for for that. And the goal in this project was simple; It’s to create a safe and comfortable place for our students to live for years and years to come.” Dart said.
In addition to fresh new coats of interior paint, the dormitory now has all new flooring, beds and desks in student rooms, updated furniture in common spaces and a video security system.
