Gerhard Struber admits that the fact Bristol City have received transfer interest in Zak Vyner this summer is “not a surprise,” but the Robins boss hopes the defender will still be a City player beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.
Vyner, who started the Reds’ 4-2 win over Hull City on Saturday afternoon, has been the subject of speculation throughout the summer transfer window so far. Belgian club Gent were linked with the academy graduate, Derby County are understood to have seen a £1million bid rejected for his services, and now Wrexham are said to be eyeing a late move for him.
Reports emerged from Sky Sports during the Robins’ win over the Tigers that the Hollywood-backed Championship side are in talks with City over the 28-year-old, having already seen a £1.75million bid rejected.

When asked by Bristol Live if he could provide an update on such speculation, Struber said: “I think that Zak Vyner has offers from different clubs, it’s not a surprise for me. He is, in the end, a very important player, and we can see it in every game, how important is he for the club, for the team.
“He is a Bristol City player, he grew here, so he is the face of the club, and we know what we have with him, but for Zak Vyner, I think he is very happy here.
“He is very, very happy here, and he enjoyed the time here, but I’m absolutely not surprised that other clubs have a lot of interest in him and maybe also in the one or other player.
“He’s super important for the here and now, and if we were to lose him, I think this would do big damage for us,” the head coach continued when asked if he was confident about keeping the defender. “I think to lose a player on this level, so close before the transfer window closes, I think this would be damaging, but this is not a big discussion between us and the management.
“I hope that nothing happens in this direction in the next few days. I have a very good connection with Zak, and I hope he also realises what he has on us, on the club.
“I am not a dreamer. We know the contract situation, we know this and everything, but I hope he will stay and nothing will happen.”

Despite the seeming uncertainty around his future heading into the last days of the summer window, Vyner impressed as City entertained in their win over Hull City. An Emil Riss brace as well as a goal apiece from Anis Mehmeti and Max Bird proved to be enough for the Reds to maintain their unbeaten record heading into the September international break.
The Robins had fallen behind after just three minutes when Joe Gelhardt lifted past Radek Vitek, having been picked out by Babajide David. From that point on, however, it was Struber’s side who wrestled back momentum, much to their head coach’s delight.
“I would say the reaction after the goal that we conceded today was really good,” the City boss explained post-match. “You could see in this moment the mentality from the boys.
“Everyone takes responsibility in this moment, and I told the boys in the dressing room, this is something that gives me a big hope, not always the technical, tactical stuff, it’s also how we handle and deal with challenging moments.
“I am today, very happy, especially with the first half and how we react after the goal that we conceded.”
