FARGO — History and architecture lovers have an opportunity to enjoy both during the Clara Barton Hawthorne Historic Home Tour on Sunday, Sept. 14.

The biennial event offers community members a chance to see historic homes while also raising money that will be used to fund free events to bring Clara Barton and Hawthorne neighbors together. The self-guided tour is set from noon to 5 p.m. and tickets cost $25.

This year’s eight homes span the 1900s to 1960s in a reflection of “the city’s evolving character and style,” according to a press release about the event. Visitors will receive an informational booklet about the homes.

Simone Wai with the Clara Barton Hawthorne Neighborhood Association said the tour aims to showcase a variety of historic homes with different styles and stories to tell. The recent merger of the two neighborhood associations widened the scope of which homes to include, and all eight are brand new to the longstanding home tour.

One of the most well-known homes on the tour is 1458 S. River Road, which is owned by John and Sherri Stern and was

designed and built in 1958 by Elizabeth Wright Ingraham and her husband Gordon.

Wright Ingraham was the granddaughter of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Another home on the tour is a Tudor-style house built in 1927 that was previously owned by former U.S. Senators Quentin Burdick and his wife

Jocelyn, who was descended from famed suffrage leader Matilda Joslyn Gage.

The bungalow at 1110 Ninth St. S.

was built by Jocelyn’s father Albert and added on to during the years the Burdick family lived there. Quentin Burdick died in 1992, and Jocelyn was appointed to complete his term, according to a 2022 Forum article. Jocelyn Burdick remained in the home until around 2010.

The tour also features a couple of charming mid-century modern homes with beautiful matching furniture, Wai said. Homeowners will be available throughout the tour to chat with visitors about their home and its history.

Typically, attendance of around 500 people is expected and tickets often sell out. They can be purchased in person at Luna or online at

to be picked up at Clara Barton Elementary School on the day of the tour.

The tour is self-guided and can be enjoyed by driving, walking or biking, Wai said. The suggested circular route is 3.7 miles.

“You can start in any of the homes and several houses are nicely clustered where you can walk to a few at a time,” Wai said.

Funds from the home tour are used for various neighborhood events for the next two years, such as an end-of-the-year block party, a Mother’s Day ice cream social, holiday events and more to build a sense of community in the Clara Barton and Hawthorne neighborhoods.

Merging the two neighborhood associations within the past year made sense from that standpoint, considering how closely they had already worked together in the past and the fact that they share an elementary school.

“It’s been a good way to get more people involved and strengthen relationships,” Wai said.
