Gwangju City held the ‘National AI Computing Center Gwangju Hosting Committee Launch Ceremony’ at the National Assembly Hall on the 1st and declared its attraction activities. The launch is a follow-up to the Ministry of Science and ICT’s confirmation of exemption from preliminary feasibility studies for the second phase of AI project “AX (Artificial Intelligence Transition) Empirical Valley Creation Project” announced in August.
More than 100 people attended the launch ceremony, including Mayor Kang Ki-jung, former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, National Assembly Vice Chairman Lee Hak-young, National Assembly Science and Defense Committee Chairman Choi Min-hee, AI CEO Baek Joon-ho, and local university presidents and industrial figures. Participants expressed their willingness to attract, emphasizing the necessity of building a super-large AI infrastructure at the national level and the suitability of Gwangju’s location.
The bidding committee was formed by the participation of administrative, political, industrial, academic, and private organizations. Eleven people, including Mayor Kang Ki-jung, local lawmakers and industrial figures, will co-chair the committee, while former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, Vice-Chairman of the National Assembly Lee Hak-young, and former Minister of Science and Technology Choi Ki-young will participate as advisors.
In the future, the committee plans to promote â–³advice on attraction strategy â–³proposal of the government â–³ expert network activities â–³ pan-citizen signature campaigns and public relations.
Gwangju City has secured a 50,000㎡ site and a 120 ㎽ power supply base in the AI integrated complex, and has experience in operating the national AI data center and the first phase of the project. In addition, it plans to become a national AI pilot city in connection with the second phase of the demonstration valley project worth 600 billion won.
Mayor Kang Ki-jung said, “Gwangju has the necessary conditions for attracting the national AI computing center, such as power, water, and data center operation experience. Gwangju will take responsibility for Korea’s future growth engine.”
