DE-CIX India has officially welcomed Starlink into its interconnection network, making it the first internet exchange (IX) platform in the country to support low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology. Starlink has secured its commercial license from India’s Department of Telecommunications, with final approval anticipated by late 2025 or early 2026.

This clears the regulatory hurdles and has significant implications not only for the satellite industry but also for the broader goals of Digital India. With a hardware cost of approximately INR 33,000 (USD 376) and monthly fees ranging from INR 3,000 to INR 4,200, Starlink aims to be accessible, especially given its promise of high-speed internet in areas where traditional connectivity is still developing.

Starlink offers throughput speeds between 25 and 220 Mbps, with the potential for even higher speeds. This capability allows for true broadband service in challenging locations such as mountainous, rural, or island areas that lack terrestrial infrastructure like fiber optics.

This initiative aligns with DE-CIX’s vision of integrating satellite, fiber, mobile, and peering technologies to create inclusive, next-generation digital experiences. By joining DE-CIX India’s interconnection platform, Starlink is set to operate as a fully-fledged internet service provider (ISP) within the country’s digital landscape.

Rather than competing with terrestrial or mobile networks, it will serve as a complementary provider. With the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem in the world and a presence in major Indian cities, DE-CIX enables satellite operators to connect locally while providing global services, ensuring the lowest possible latency for users in even the most remote areas.
