HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The Huntsville Museum of Art reopened Sunday, after undergoing upgrades for six months.
To celebrate the grand reopening, the museum allowed everyone to come in free of charge, and a big crowd followed.
The museum closed down back in March to implement a new state-of-the-art HVAC system.
WAFF 48’s Noah Cowell spoke with visitors who say the upgrade was much needed. They say now, the layout and feel of the museum are entirely different.
The art museum leaders say they didn’t want to be closed the whole summer, but they needed the new HVAC system to keep their pieces and visiting exhibits in pristine condition.
On its first day back, over 1,500 people came to see a completely redesigned interior, with brand-new exhibits that guests say created a fun, modern feel.
From impressionist to realist pieces, to new photography, paintings, and graphics, visitors and curators want to stress that there really is something for everyone.
“I loved the fact that there was a Zelda Fitzgerald watercolor in there. I was really floored at that. I didn’t know that she painted, so it was a really pleasant experience,” said visitor Holly Watkins.
“There was a bunch of beautiful ocean, nature, and realism, too,” added her sister, Hope. “Really good mix in there.”
Daniel Owen with the museum says they had people there today available to answer any questions people had about the artwork.
The museum is also trying to improve accessibility through large print binders for those who can’t read the art descriptions on the walls.
The museum will be closed on Labor Day but will open back up at 10 am on Tuesday.
