Hiring events to be held across SC for Workforce Development Month

  • September 1, 2025

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – September marks a busy time for the people who connect companies and businesses with job seekers in South Carolina, with special hiring events planned every week of the month.

Those events are part of Workforce Development Month and are being scheduled statewide.

“Really, every month at SC Works is a workforce development month, but September specifically, we really focus on bringing awareness to all of the amazing opportunities that are here in South Carolina,” Catherine Hill, one of four senior business services consultants with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, says.

Their job is to connect employers with employees.

“We manage the state’s largest job bank. We can advertise their jobs in our SC Works job bank,” she says. “Anybody who is on unemployment in the state of South Carolina, that is the job bank they’re using to do their work searches.”

If you want to update your resume or refine your interview skills before you attend those job fairs, SC Works offers workshops to help. Many of them are in-person and virtual online. All you have to do is sign up, and they’re all free.

And those hiring events offer something for every skill level.

“Even with within our manufacturing sectors, there are a lot of other opportunities, administrative, finance, HR,” Hill says. “So at any of our job fairs, you’re going to find all of the above entry-level positions, you’ll find mid-level positions, and then more senior positions.”

Preparing the next generation of workers for the state is Dr. Patricia Ferguson, one of 12 regional workforce advisors with SCDEW.

“We coordinate and facilitate the delivery of information, resources, and services to help the community understand what careers are in demand, what skills are required for those careers, and where to find the training,” Ferguson says.

Her team is focusing on students as early as elementary school to get them career-oriented.

“As early as possible. We need them to begin thinking about the careers earlier and not just thinking about careers but identifying what are their interests and what skills they may have that aligns with a particular job,” Ferguson says.

They work closely with school counselors to help students connect the dots as to how algebra and other key classes will enable them to excel on the job or even in their own businesses.
