Apple is about to release iOS 18.7, according to a new report on Apple-focused site MacRumors, which has seen evidence of the iPhone update in its visitor logs.

The iOS 18.7 update will launch alongside Apple’s latest and greatest software upgrade iOS 26, for users of older devices and those who are reluctant to upgrade straight away.

So, what will be in the iOS 18.7 update and should you apply it on your iPhone? Here’s what you need to know.

iOS 18.7 Will Contain Security Updates And Bug Fixes

While the exact content of iOS 18.7 isn’t clear, it’s unlikely the update will include features. Instead, iOS 18.7 will contain security fixes.

Apple is very much aware that many people don’t like to update to the latest software, which is why it will ensure iOS 18 is still stable for those who don’t choose to upgrade straight away.

When Apple releases a major software overhaul, in this case iOS 26, it keeps the earlier version available for all iPhone users for a limited period. It is therefore likely that iOS 18 will be updated with security fixes for at least a few months for all iPhone users.

But iOS 18 won’t be a choice forever. Anyone who has an iPhone 11 or above will eventually have to update to iOS 26 to remain secure. Earlier devices that can’t run iOS 26 will be updated for a few more years with security fixes.

Alongside security patches, it’s also possible iOS 18.7 will include bug fixes for issues affecting users since updating to iOS 18.6.2.

iOS 26 Or iOS 18.7? What To Do

Apple’s iOS 26 and iOS 18.7 are coming soon, with the Apple event confirmed for Sept. 9. Previous new iOS versions have arrived around a week after the initial launch, so expect iOS 26 and iOS 18.7 around Sept. 15 or Sept. 16.

So, to the important question — which update should you choose? It doesn’t actually matter, but you need to upgrade to iOS 26 or iOS 18.7 to ensure your iPhone is secure.

Otherwise, it’s about whether you want to try new features, including new security and privacy enhancements in iOS 26, and how much you care about early bugs. For me it’s a no brainer — I can’t wait to try out iOS 26.

To look for iOS 26 and iOS 18.7, go to Settings > General > Software Update and choose to upgrade your iPhone when the updates arrive.
