Tennis pro Naomi Osaka, who faces Coco Gauff in a major showdown at the U.S. Open on September 1, has opened up about motherhood.
Osaka is the mother to 2-year-old daughter, Shai, whom she shares with her ex-boyfriend Cordae, a musician she dated until January.
Her comments on motherhood came in her new documentary on Tubi, which is called Naomi Osaka: The Second Set.
“I have multiple identities. My return to the sport is a love letter for moms,” Osaka says in a trailer for the documentary. Referring to her child, she added, “Some people say she ended my career, but for me, it feels like she started my career.”
Osaka is currently the 24th-ranked women’s tennis player in the world, according to WTA.
The trailer opens with Osaka saying, “I’m a tennis player, but I’m more than just an athlete,” before it cuts to a scene of Osaka with her daughter.
“Having a family for me, that was my biggest dream. I always wanted to be a mom,” she says.
In 2023, Osaka revealed she was pregnant in an Instagram post she later deleted, according to People.
“The past few years have been interesting to say the least, but I find that it’s the most challenging times in life that may be the most fun. These few months away from the sport has really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I’ve dedicated my life to,” she wrote, People reported.
“I realize that life is so short and I don’t take any moments for granted, every day is a new blessing and adventure. I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom,’ haha,” the deleted post continued.
According to Cosmopolitan, Osaka announced that she and Cordae had broken up in an Instagram story. “He’s a great person and an awesome dad,” she wrote, according to Cosmopolitan. “Honestly really glad our paths crossed because my daughter is my biggest blessing and I was able to grow a lot from our experiences together.”
