HONOLULU (Island News) — Hurricane Kiko is gaining strength in the eastern Pacific but remains far from Hawaii.

As of early this morning, the storm was located about 1,815 miles east of Hilo, moving slowly west at 6 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. Kiko is expected to continue strengthening and could become a major hurricane by Wednesday night. However, it is still too far away to affect the islands, and there are no watches or warnings in place.

Here in Hawaii, today’s weather will be mostly calm. Scattered showers are moving across the islands, especially over windward areas and the Big Island and Maui, where low-level clouds are moving in. Winds are light to moderate due to a weak high-pressure system north of the state.

Leeward areas should stay mostly dry, though afternoon clouds and a few light showers may pop up along the Kona slopes. Expect similar conditions to continue through the rest of the week, with no major weather changes expected.

While Hurricane Kiko is being closely watched, it poses no immediate threat to Hawaii, and today’s local weather remains fairly typical for early September.
